DocuSign Encourages Legal Professionals Go Digital in Recognition of National ESIGN Day

DocuSign Offers Webinar to Educate Lawyers about Digital Transaction Management and Electronic Signatures

SAN FRANCISCO June 30, 2014 —DocuSign, Inc. (DocuSign®) in recognition of National ESIGN Day announced it will offer members of the legal profession an educational webinar on July 16, 2014 about the legal framework for electronic signature in the United States, including updates on regulatory developments.

“DocuSign’s Digital Transaction Management platform and eSignature solution offer lawyers and their executive counterparts an easier, faster, more convenient and secure way to transact business,” said Ken Moyle, chief legal officer and vice president of legal and corporate affairs, DocuSign, and chairman of the Public Policy Committee, Electronic Signatures and Records Association (ESRA). “DocuSign is proud to be a catalyst that’s helping organizations of every size, industry and geography achieve their digital transformations. ESIGN is virtually an all-encompassing law that lawyers can use to champion the move to all digital transactions in their business for dramatic ROI, increased security and compliance, and a better client experience.”

National ESIGN Day was spearheaded by DocuSign who formed a coalition to have it passed by both houses of the U.S. Congress. ESIGN Day was officially designated by Congress on June 30, 2010, following President Clinton signing into law the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce (ESIGN) Act on June 30, 2000. The federal ESIGN Act created a vast opportunity for companies of every size and industry to benefit from the speed, security and convenience of eSignatures for the past 14 years.

One industry that is benefiting today is corporate restructuring. Robert Klamser, co-founder of UpShot Services LLC, a company that specializes in acting as an agent of the Court in Chapter 11 Bankruptcy proceedings, says “eSignature naturally resonated with my partner, a former bankruptcy lawyer. In a paper-laden practice within the legal industry, we knew it was vital to digitize the Chapter 11 space by partnering with DocuSign, the global standard for Digital Transaction Management. Our business model is now tailored to the new digital future of claims management – making us more efficient and better able to service our stakeholders.”

DocuSign allows its customers to meet all the requirements of the ESIGN Act to give customers assurance that DocuSigned documents are safe, secure and legally enforceable – even more so than if they were signed the “old fashioned way” with paper and pen as all DocuSigned documents come complete with an audit trail that is admissible as evidence. The ESIGN Act covers contract types of all kinds including arbitration, life and auto insurance and securities.

The one-hour educational webinar titled “The Legality of eSignature: Take Your Company Digital with DocuSign” will be offered on July 16 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern Time. Topics to be covered include:

  • The Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (UETA) of 1999
  • The Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN) of 2000
  • General Rule of Validity
  • What is an Electronic Signature?
  • Electronic Evidence
  • Relevant Case Law

Regulatory Developments including Mobile Devices and Mobile Privacy
